이 유전자는 초파리의 ‘dunce’ 유전자에 해당하는 네 개의 포유류 유전자 중 하나를 암호화한다. 이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 3’,5’-cyclic-AMP phosphodiesterase (포스포디에스테라제) 활성을 가지며, 다양한 세포 유형에서 신호 전달 분자(signal transduction molecule)로 작용하는 cAMP를 분해한다. 이 유전자는 기능성 단백질을 암호화하는 여러 대체 접합 전사체 변이체(alternatively spliced transcript variants)를 생성하기 위해 서로 다른 프로모터를 사용한다.
