PDCD6IP 유전자는 세포질 분열의 만출 단계, 내강 소포(vesicle) 형성, 그리고 피막 바이러스 방출 과정에서 ESCRT 경로 내에서 작용하는 단백질을 암호화한다. 마우스 세포를 이용한 연구에 따르면, 이 단백질의 과발현은 세포자멸사(apoptosis)를 억제할 수 있다. 또한, 이 유전자의 산물은 세포자멸사에 필요한 단백질인 PDCD6 유전자의 산물과 칼슘 의존적으로 결합하며, 세포내이입(endocytosis) 시 막(membrane) 형태를 조절하는 단백질인 엔도필린과도 결합한다. 이 유전자 산물과 엔도필린의 과발현은 세포 사멸로부터의 보호에 부분적으로 기여할 수 있는 세포질 공포화를 유발한다. 여러 대체 전사체 변이체가 이 유전자에 대해 확인되었으며, 이는 다양한 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화한다. 관련 유사 위유전자(pseudogene)가 15번 염색체에서 확인되었다.
