유전자 개요
PAX8 유전자는 전사 인자(transcription factor)인 paired box (PAX) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 유전자 계열의 구성원들은 통상 paired box domain, octapeptide, 그리고 paired-type homeodomain을 포함하는 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 핵 단백질은 갑상샘 여포 세포 발달과 갑상샘 특이적 유전자의 발현에 관여한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 갑상샘 이형성증, 갑상샘 여포암, 그리고 비정형 갑상샘 여포선종과 관련이 있다. 다양한 아이소폼(isoform)를 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변이체(transcript variant)가 기술되었다.
