이 유전자는 메신신 금속단백질분해효소(metzincin metalloproteinases) 계열인 파팔리신(pappalysin) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 인슐린 유사 성장 인자 결합 단백질 5(insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 5)를 절단하며, 인슐린 유사 성장 인자(insulin-like growth factor, IGF)의 이용 가능성에 대한 국소 조절자로 생각된다. 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 인해 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)가 생긴다.
