PANX1이 암호화하는 단백질은 이넥신(innexin) 계열에 속하며, 이 계열 구성원은 간극연접(gap junction)의 구조적 구성 요소이다. 이 단백질과 pannexin 2는 중추신경계(central nervous system, CNS)에서 풍부하게 발현되며 다양한 신경세포 집단에서 함께 발현된다. Xenopus 난모세포를 이용한 연구는 이 단백질이 단독으로, 또는 pannexin 2와 함께 세포 유형 특이적이고 서로 다른 특성을 지닌 간극연접을 형성할 수 있음을 시사한다.
