PAI1(SERPINE1)은 세린 단백질분해효소 저해제(serine proteinase inhibitor, serpin) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 조직 플라스미노겐 활성화인자(tissue plasminogen activator, tPA)와 유로키나아제(urokinase, uPA)의 주요 저해제로서 섬유소용해(fibrinolysis)를 억제하며, 선천 항바이러스 면역의 구성요소로도 기능한다. 이 유전자의 결함은 플라스미노겐 활성화인자 저해제-1 결핍(PAI-1 deficiency)을 일으키고, 산물의 높은 농도는 혈전성향증(thrombophilia)과 연관된다.
