이 유전자는 세린/트레오닌 키나아제(serine/threonine kinases) 계열인 RSK(ribosomal S6 kinase) 패밀리의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 키나아제는 2개의 비동일한 키나아제 촉매 도메인을 포함하며, 유사분열자 활성화 키나아제(mitogen-activated kinase, MAPK) 신호 전달 경로의 구성원을 포함한 다양한 기질을 인산화한다. 이 단백질의 활성은 세포 성장과 분화 조절에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 대체 전사 스플라이스 변이체가 규명되었다.
