P2RX7은 ATP에 대한 퓨린수용체(purinoceptor) 계열에 속하는 산물을 만든다. 이 수용체는 리간드 개폐성 이온 채널(ligand-gated ion channel)로 기능하며, 큰 분자가 투과할 수 있는 막 공극을 형성해 ATP 의존적 대식세포 용해를 매개한다. 세포질 내 ATP에 의한 활성화는 세포 활동을 유전자 발현 변화와 연결하는 기전일 수 있으며, 확인된 다수의 선택적 스플라이싱 변이체는 대부분 비센스 매개 분해(nonsense-mediated decay, NMD) 기준에 부합한다.
