이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 G-단백질 연결 수용체(G-protein coupled receptor) 계열에 속하며 옥시토신(oxytocin) 수용체(receptor)로 작용한다. 이 단백질의 활성은 포스파티딜이노시톨-칼슘 제2전령계(phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system)를 활성화시키는 G 단백질에 의해 매개된다. 옥시토신-옥시토신 수용체 시스템은 출산 시 자궁에서 중요한 역할을 한다.
