OTC 유전자는 미토콘드리아 기질(mitochondrial matrix)에 위치하는 효소(enzyme)를 암호화한다. 이 효소가 지정하는 단백질은 요소 회로(urea cycle)에 관여하며, 암모니아를 요소로 해독하여 배설하는 기능을 한다. 이 효소의 돌연변이는 오르니틴 트랜스카르바밀라제 결핍증(ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency)을 유발하여 고암모니아혈증(hyperammonemia)을 일으킨다.
