OLR1은 C-type 렉틴(lectin) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 저밀도 지질단백질(low density lipoprotein) 수용체(receptor)를 암호화하고, cyclic AMP 신호전달경로에 의해 조절된다. 이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 산화된 저밀도 지질단백질(oxidized low-density lipoprotein)을 결합·내재화·분해하며, Fas 유도 세포자멸사(apoptosis) 조절과 스캐빈저 수용체(scavenger receptor) 역할에 관여할 수 있다. 또한 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 동맥경화증과 심근경색증(myocardial infarction) 위험 및 알츠하이머병 위험성 변화와 관련이 있고, 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)은 다수의 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)을 생성한다.
