이 유전자는 사이토카인(cytokine)에 의해 유도되는 밀착연결(tight junction) 세포간 투과성 장벽 조절에 필요한 막 내재 단백질(membrane protein)을 암호화한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 자염색체 열성 신경 장애인 띠형 석회화 단순화 뇌이회 및 다소뇌이회(band-like calcification with simplified gyration and polymicrogyria, BLC-PMG), 즉 가성 TORCH 증후군(pseudo-TORCH syndrome)의 원인으로 여겨진다. 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)이 생성되며, 관련 위유전자(pseudogene)가 5번 염색체 q팔 1.5 Mb 하류에 존재한다.
