이 유전자는 2’, 5’-올리고아데닐레이트 합성효소(2’, 5’ oligoadenylate synthase) 계열에 속하는 효소를 암호화한다. 인터페론(interferon)에 의해 유도되는 이 효소는 아데노신의 2’, 5’-올리고머를 촉매하여 RNase L에 결합하고 활성화시킨다. 이 효소 계열은 세포 단백질 합성 억제와 바이러스 감염 저항에 중요한 역할을 수행한다.
