OAS1은 인터페론(interferon)에 의해 발현이 유도되며, 2’,5’-올리고아데닐산(2’,5’-oligoadenylates, 2-5As)을 합성하는 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 선천 면역의 항바이러스 반응(innate antiviral response)에서 핵심 역할을 하며 세포 증식과 세포자멸사(apoptosis) 같은 다른 세포 과정에도 관여하고, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 효소 활성이 서로 다른 여러 전사체 변이가 만들어진다. 12번 염색체의 관련 유전자 클러스터에 위치하며, 이 유전자의 다형성은 SARS-CoV-2를 포함한 바이러스 감염 감수성 및 제1형 당뇨병과 연관되어 있는 것으로 보고되었다.
