NSE는 포유류에 존재하는 세 가지 에놀라제(enolase) 동질효소 중 하나를 암호화하며, 이 동질효소는 동종이량체(homodimer)로서 성숙한 신경세포와 신경 기원 세포에서 발견된다. 쥐와 영장류에서는 발생 과정 중 신경 조직에서 알파 에놀라제(alpha enolase)가 감마 에놀라제(gamma enolase)로 전환되는 양상이 나타난다.
