이 유전자는 중심체(centrosome) 복제, 단백질 샤페닝(protein chaperoning), 세포 증식 등 다양한 세포 과정에 관여하는 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 인단백질(phosphoprotein)은 핵소체(nucleolus), 세포핵(nucleus), 세포질(cytoplasm) 사이를 오가며 리보솜 단백질과 핵심 히스톤(core histones)을 세포핵에서 세포질로 운반한다. 또한, 이 단백질은 종양 억제 인자(tumor suppressor)인 ARF를 핵소체에 격리시켜 필요할 때까지 분해로부터 보호하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 급성 골수성 백혈병(acute myeloid leukemia)과 관련이 있다.
