NPC2는 지질 인식 도메인(lipid recognition domain)을 가진 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 후기 엔도솜/리소좀계(late endosomal/lysosomal system)를 통한 콜레스테롤(cholesterol) 수송을 조절하는 데 관여하는 것으로 추정된다. NPC2의 돌연변이는 니만-피크병 C2형(Niemann-Pick disease, type C2) 및 전두엽 위축(frontal lobe atrophy)과 연관된 것으로 보고되었다.
