이 유전자가 지정하는 B 아이소폼(isoform)은 뉴클레오사이드 이인산 키나아제(nucleoside diphosphate kinase, NDK)라는 헥사머(hexamer)를 구성합니다. 이 유전자는 여러 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변이체(transcript variants)를 가지고 있습니다. 인접한 상류 유전자인 NME1로부터의 연관 전사(read-through transcription)는 각 개별 유전자 산물과 동일한 서열을 공유하는 융합 단백질(fusion protein)을 암호화하는 자연 발생적 전사체(NME1-NME2)를 생성합니다.
