이 유전자는 신경펩타이드 계열인 밤베신 유사체의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 구성원은 식행동을 음성적으로 조절한다. 암호화된 단백질은 신경펩타이드 B 수용체(neuromedin B receptor, NMBR)에 결합함으로써 대장 평활근 수축을 조절할 수 있다. 이 유전자의 다형성은 배고픔, 체중 증가 및 비만과 관련될 수 있다. 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 인해 여러 전사체 변이형이 생성된다.
