이 단백질은 타입 IV 중간섬유(intermediate filament) 이종중합체의 구성 요소인 헤비 체인(heavy chain)을 지정합니다. 신경 필라멘트는 뉴런의 축삭 골격을 이루며 뉴런의 직경을 유지하는 데 기능적으로 중요합니다. 또한 신경 필라멘트는 신경세포체에서 축삭 및 수상돌기로의 세포 내 수송에도 관여할 수 있습니다. 이 유전자는 헤비 신경 필라멘트 단백질을 암호화하며, 이 단백질은 뉴런 손상의 바이오마커로 흔히 사용됩니다. 또한 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 근위축성 측삭 경화증(amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS)에 대한 감수성과 관련이 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
