NCAM1은 면역글로불린 상위계열(immunoglobulin superfamily)에 속하는 세포 부착 단백질(cell adhesion protein)을 암호화하며, 발생 및 분화 과정에서 세포 간 상호작용과 세포-기질 상호작용을 매개한다. 이 단백질은 신경발생(neurogenesis), 신경돌기 성장, 세포 이동을 조절하여 신경계 발달에 관여하는 한편, T·B 림프구와 자연살해세포(natural killer cell)의 증식에도 작용해 면역 감시에 기여한다. 대표 아이소폼(isoform)인 세포 표면 분자 CD56은 급성 골수성 백혈병(acute myeloid leukemia)을 비롯한 골수증식성 질환과 연관되며, 발현 차이가 질환 진행 양상의 차이와 상관관계를 보인다.
