NAGA 유전자는 리소좀 효소(lysosomal enzyme)인 알파-N-아세틸갈락토사민 가수분해효소(alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase)를 암호화합니다. 이 효소는 글리코콘쥬게이트(glycoconjugates)로부터 알파-N-아세틸갈락토사민(alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminyl) 부분을 절단합니다. NAGA 유전자의 돌연변이는 Schindler disease types I과 II (type II는 Kanzaki disease로도 알려짐)의 원인으로 확인되었습니다.
