MUC5B는 점액 분비물의 고도로 당화된 거대분자 성분인 뮤신(mucin) 단백질 계열에 속하며, 점액에서 겔을 형성하는 주요 뮤신이다. 전체 타액과 정상 폐 점액, 자궁경부 점액의 윤활 및 점탄성(viscoelastic) 특성에 크게 기여한다. 만성 비부비동염(CRS), 비용종을 동반한 CRS, 만성 폐쇄성 폐질환(COPD), 헬리코박터 파일로리(H. pylori) 관련 위 질환 등 일부 질환에서 발현이 증가하며, 이들 질환의 병인에 관여할 수 있다.
