MUC5AC는 세포외기질(extracellular matrix) 구성 성분이자 윤활 활성(lubricant activity)을 나타내고, 세포외기질의 구조적 구성 성분으로 작용할 것으로 예측되며, 수정체 투명성 유지의 상위 단계 또는 그 과정 내에서 기능할 것으로 예측된다. 단백질은 세포외 공간(extracellular space)과 점액층(mucus layer)에 위치하며 안구건조증(dry eye syndrome)과 연관된다. 또한 쇼그렌 증후군(Sjogren’s syndrome), 여러 담도 질환, 낭성 섬유증(cystic fibrosis), 다양한 안질환, 여러 췌장암(pancreatic cancer)을 포함한 다수 질환의 바이오마커(biomarker)로 알려져 있다.
