점액은 기관, 결장, 자궁경부 등의 상피 표면을 덮는 점성의 분비물로, 고도로 당화된 단백질인 뮤신(mucin)이 주성분입니다. 이 유전자는 세포 표면에 존재하는 필수 막 당단백질(membrane glycoprotein)을 암호화하며, 분비형 동형체도 존재할 수 있습니다. 이 유전자는 코딩 서열 내에 48 뉴클레오타이드(nt) 길이의 반복 서열이 가변적인 수(100개 초과)로 포함되어 있으며, 최소 24개의 전사체 변이체가 발견되었으나, 이 중 다수는 전체 길이 전사체가 결정되지 않았거나 종양 조직에서만 발견됩니다.
