MUC16은 뮤신(mucin) 계열에 속하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 뮤신은 보호성 점액 장벽 형성에 중요한 역할을 하는 고분자량 O-당화(O-glycosylated) 단백질로 상피의 첨단면(apical surface)에서 발견된다. 이 단백질은 막에 고정된(membrane-tethered) 뮤신으로 아미노 말단의 세포외 도메인, 큰 직렬 반복(tandem repeat) 도메인, 그리고 짧은 세포질 도메인을 동반한 막관통 도메인으로 구성되며, 병원체로부터 상피세포를 보호하는 장벽 형성에 관여하는 것으로 여겨진다. 이 유전자의 산물은 여러 암의 표지자로 사용되어 왔으며, 발현 수준이 높을수록 더 나쁜 예후와 연관된다.
