유전자 개요

MUC1은 점액소(mucin) 계열에 속하는 막 결합 단백질을 암호화하며, 이 단백질은 O-당화(O-glycosylation)를 거쳐 상피 표면에 보호성 점액 장벽을 형성하는 동시에 세포내 신호전달에도 관여한다. 폐, 유방, 위, 췌장 등 여러 조직의 점막을 덮는 상피세포의 정단부(apical surface)에 발현되며, 단백질 분해를 통해 알파·베타 소단위로 잘려 이종이량체(heterodimer)를 이루는데 N-말단 알파 소단위는 세포 부착에, C-말단 베타 소단위는 세포 신호전달에 기능한다. 과발현, 비정상적 세포내 위치, 당화 변화는 암종(carcinoma)과 연관되며, 고도로 다형성인 VNTR 도메인을 포함하고 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사 변이체가 생성된다.
