이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 MSH2와 이합체(heterodimer)를 형성하여 MutS beta를 구성하며, 이는 복제 후 DNA 불일치 복구 시스템(post-replicative DNA mismatch repair system)의 일부이다. MutS beta는 불일치에 결합한 후 MutL alpha 이합체와 복합체를 형성함으로써 불일치 복구를 개시한다. 이 유전자는 첫 번째 엑손(exon)에 다형성(polymorphic) 9 bp 이중 반복 서열(tandem repeat sequence)을 포함한다. 해당 반복 서열은 참조 게놈 서열에 6회 존재하며, 3-7회의 반복이 보고되었다. 이 유전자의 결함은 자궁내막암(endometrial cancer)에 대한 감수성의 원인이 된다.
