MRC1이 암호화하는 단백질은 대식세포(macrophage)에서 당단백질(glycoprotein)의 세포내이입(endocytosis)을 매개하는 제I형 막수용체(type I membrane receptor)이다. 당단백질에 존재하는 복합 탄수화물 구조의 인식은 세포-세포 인식, 혈청 당단백질 전환, 병원체 중화 등 여러 생물학적 과정에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 단백질은 잠재적 병원성 바이러스, 세균, 진균 표면의 고만노스(high-mannose) 구조에 결합하여 이들이 식세포 포식(phagocytic engulfment)으로 중화될 수 있도록 하는 것으로 알려져 있다.
