유전자 개요
MPZ는 말초신경계의 슈반세포(Schwann cell)에서 특이적으로 발현되며, 말초 수초집의 주요 구조 단백질인 I형 막관통 당단백질(glycoprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 단백질의 큰 소수성 세포외 도메인과 비교적 작은 염기성 세포내 도메인은 치밀 수초의 다층 구조를 형성하고 안정화하는 데 필수적이며, 유전자 돌연변이는 상염색체 우성 샤르코-마리-투스병 1형(CMT1B)을 비롯해 데제린-소타스 증후군(DSS), 선천성 저수초화 신경병증(CHN) 등의 다발신경병증과 연관된다. 최근 연구에서는 정지 코돈 판독통과(stop codon readthrough) 기전을 통해 동일한 mRNA에서 서로 다른 동일 프레임 번역 종결 코돈이 사용되어 두 가지 동형 단백질이 생성됨이 보고되었다.
