유전자 개요

MMP9은 기질 금속단백분해효소(matrix metalloproteinase, MMP) 계열에 속하며, 이 계열 단백질은 배아 발생·생식·조직 재형성 같은 정상 생리 과정과 관절염(arthritis)·전이(metastasis) 같은 질병 과정에서 세포외기질(extracellular matrix) 분해에 관여한다. MMP9이 암호화하는 효소(enzyme)는 IV형 및 V형 콜라겐(collagen)을 분해한다. 붉은털원숭이 연구에서는 이 효소가 IL-8 유도 골수 조혈 전구세포 동원에 관여함이 시사되었고, 생쥐 연구에서는 종양(tumor) 관련 조직 재형성에서의 역할이 제시되었다.
