유전자 개요

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 계열의 단백질들은 비록 정상적인 생리 과정, 예를 들어 배아 발달, 생식, 조직 재형성뿐만 아니라 관절염 및 전이와 같은 질병 과정에도 관여하지만, 세포외 기질의 분해에 관여합니다. 이 유전자가 지정하는 전구단백질은 성숙한 효소(enzyme)를 생성하기 위해 단백질 분해적으로 처리됩니다. 이 효소는 제4형 콜라겐, 피브로넥틴, 피브리노겐, 베타-카세인을 분해하고, 절단을 통해 matrix metalloproteinase-9을 활성화할 수 있습니다. 이 단백질은 보존된 C-말단 단백질 도메인(protein domain)이 없다는 점에서 대부분의 MMP 계열 구성원과 다릅니다. 이 단백질은 다양한 인간 암에서 세포 침윤을 촉진할 수 있습니다.
