유전자 개요

MMP11은 세포외기질(extracellular matrix)의 분해에 관여하는 기질 금속단백분해효소(matrix metalloproteinase, MMP) 계열로, 배아 발생·생식·조직 리모델링 같은 정상 생리 과정뿐 아니라 관절염·전이 같은 질환 과정에도 작용한다. 대부분의 MMP는 불활성 전구단백질(proprotein)로 분비되어 세포외 단백분해효소에 의해 절단될 때 활성화되지만, MMP11은 구성적 분비 경로(constitutive secretory pathway) 내에서 퓨린(furin)에 의해 세포 내에서 활성화된다. 또한 다른 MMP와 달리 이 효소는 알파1-단백분해효소 억제제(alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor)를 절단하지만 세포외기질의 구조 단백질은 약하게 분해한다.
