유전자 개요

MMP1은 기질 금속단백질분해효소(matrix metalloproteinases, MMPs)의 펩티다아제 M10(peptidase M10) 계열에 속하는 효소를 암호화하며, 이 계열 단백질은 배아 발달·생식·조직 재형성 같은 정상 생리 과정과 관절염·전이 같은 질병 과정에서 세포외기질(extracellular matrix)의 분해에 관여한다. 암호화된 전구단백질(preproprotein)은 단백질분해 과정을 거쳐 성숙한 분해효소(protease)로 전환되며, 분비된 이 효소는 제I·II·III형을 포함한 간질 콜라겐(interstitial collagen)을 분해한다. MMP1은 11번 염색체의 MMP 유전자 군집에 위치하고 그 돌연변이는 만성 폐쇄성 폐질환(COPD)과 연관되며, 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이가 생성되는데 그중 적어도 하나는 단백질분해 과정을 거치는 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화한다.
