이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 제2형 막횡단 당단백질(glycoprotein)이며, 인간의 급성 림프구성 백혈병(acute lymphocytic leukemia, ALL) 진단에 중요한 세포 표면 표지자인 흔한 급성 림프구성 백혈병 항원(antigen)입니다. 지정된 단백질은 ALL의 85%를 차지하는 전(pre-B) 표현형의 백혈병 세포에서 발현됩니다. 하지만 이 단백질은 백혈병 세포에 국한되지 않고 다양한 정상 조직에서도 발견됩니다. 이 단백질은 소수성 잔기(residue)의 아미노 쪽에서 펩타이드(peptide)를 절단하는 중성 내인성 펩티다아제(neutral endopeptidase)로, 글루카곤, 엔케팔린, 물질 P, 뉴로텐신, 옥시토신, 브래디키닌을 포함한 여러 펩타이드 호르몬을 불활성화합니다.
