MGST1 유전자는 MAPEG (Membrane Associated Proteins in Eicosanoid and Glutathione metabolism) 계열에 속하는 단백질을 지정한다. 이 단백질은 글루타치온(glutathione)을 친전자체(electrophile)에 접합시키고 지질 하이드로퍼옥사이드(lipid hydroperoxide)를 환원시키는 반응을 촉매한다. 이 단백질은 소포체(endoplasmic reticulum)와 미토콘드리아 외막(outer mitochondrial membrane)에 위치하며, 이들 막을 산화 스트레스로부터 보호하는 것으로 생각된다.
