MFAP4는 소 미세섬유 관련 단백질(bovine microfibril-associated protein)과 유사한 단백질을 암호화하며, 이 단백질은 콜라겐(collagen)과 탄수화물(carbohydrate) 양쪽에 대한 결합 특이성을 가진다. 세포 부착(cell adhesion)이나 세포 간 상호작용에 관여하는 세포외기질(extracellular matrix) 단백질로 여겨지며, 해당 유전자는 Smith-Magenis 증후군 영역 내에 위치한다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 두 종류의 전사 변이체(transcript variant)가 확인되었다.
