MCL1은 Bcl-2 계열에 속하는 항세포자멸사(anti-apoptotic) 단백질을 암호화하며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이체가 생성된다. 가장 긴 산물인 동형체 1(isoform 1)은 세포자멸사(apoptosis)를 억제하여 세포 생존을 촉진하는 반면, 대체 스플라이싱으로 만들어지는 더 짧은 산물인 동형체 2와 3은 세포자멸사를 유도하여 세포 사멸을 촉진한다.
