이 유전자는 대장암(colorectal cancer)의 가족성 및 산발성에서 흔히 돌연변이를 일으키는 APC 단백질과의 결합을 통해 처음 확인된 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 간기 세포(interphase cells)의 미세소관(microtubule)에, 특히 성장하는 끝부분에 국소화된다. 유사분열(mitosis) 동안 이 단백질은 중심체(centrosomes) 및 방추사 미세소관(spindle microtubules)과 연관된다. 또한 이 단백질은 닥틴 복합체(dynactin complex) 구성 성분 및 세포질 다이닌(cytoplasmic dynein)의 중간 사슬과도 연관된다. 이러한 연관성 때문에 이 단백질은 미세소관 구조 및 염색체 안정성 조절에 관여하는 것으로 생각된다. 이 유전자는 RP/EB 계열에 속한다.
