MAP1A와 MAP1B 단백질은 미세소관(microtubule)과 세포골격(cytoskeleton) 구성 요소 간의 물리적 상호작용을 매개하는 미세소관 관련 단백질이다. 이 유전자는 MAP1A 또는 MAP1B와 결합할 수 있는 경쇄 소단위체(light chain subunit) 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 두 개의 전사 변이체가 발견되었다. 변이체 1의 발현은 다수의 종양(tumor) 세포주에서 억제되어, 발암 과정에 관여할 가능성을 시사한다.
