LY96는 세포 표면에서 톨유사수용체 4(toll-like receptor 4, TLR4)와 결합해 지질다당류(lipopolysaccharide, LPS)에 대한 반응성을 부여하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 이를 통해 수용체와 LPS 신호전달을 잇는 연결고리 역할을 한다. 마우스 오솔로그(ortholog) 연구는 LY96가 내독소 중화에 관여할 가능성을 시사한다. 또한 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
