이 유전자는 아연 의존성 금속카르복시펩티다아제(zinc-dependent metallocarboxypeptidases)의 유일하게 알려진 단백질 저해제(protein inhibitor)를 암호화한다. 해당 단백질인 락테신(latexin)은 조혈모세포(hematopoietic stem cells)의 개체 수를 감소시킨다. 이 단백질은 프로모터(promoter) 과잉 메틸화로 인해 암(cancer) 세포에서 하향 조절되는 것으로 밝혀졌다.
