LRRK2는 leucine-rich repeat 키나아제(LRRK) 족(family)에 속하며, ankryin repeat 영역, leucine-rich repeat(LRR) 도메인, 키나아제(kinase) 도메인, DFG-like 모티프, RAS 도메인, GTPase 도메인, MLK-like 도메인 및 WD40 도메인을 갖는 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 주로 세포질(cytoplasm)에 존재하지만, 미토콘드리아 외막(outer membrane)과도 연관된다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 파킨슨병(Parkinson disease)-8과 관련이 있다.
