이 유전자는 지질단백질 리파아제(lipoprotein lipase)를 암호화하며, 이는 심장, 근육, 지방 조직에서 발현됩니다. LPL은 이합체(homodimer)로 기능하며, 트리글리세라이드 가수분해효소(triglyceride hydrolase)와 수용체 매개 지질단백질 흡수를 위한 리간드/연결 인자(ligand/bridging factor)라는 두 가지 기능을 수행합니다. LPL 결핍을 유발하는 심각한 돌연변이는 제1형 고지질단백혈증을 야기하는 반면, LPL의 덜 극단적인 돌연변이는 다양한 지질단백질 대사 장애와 관련이 있습니다.
