유전자 개요
LIF가 암호화하는 단백질은 여러 시스템에 걸쳐 작용하는 다면발현성 사이토카인(cytokine)이다. 정상 세포와 골수성 백혈병(myeloid leukemia) 세포에서의 조혈 분화(hematopoietic differentiation) 유도, 신경세포 분화 유도, 신장 발달 과정에서의 중간엽-상피 전환(mesenchymal to epithelial conversion) 조절에 관여하며, 모체-태아 경계면의 면역 관용(immune tolerance)에도 역할을 할 수 있다. 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 전사체 변이가 관찰되었다.
