이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 비오틴 및 리포산 합성효소(biotin and lipoic acid synthetases) 계열에 속한다. 미토콘드리아(mitochondrion)에 위치하는 이 철-황(iron-sulfur) 효소는 강력한 항산화제인 리포산(lipoic acid)의 신생 경로(de novo pathway)에서 마지막 단계를 촉매한다. 이 효소의 발현 결핍은 당뇨병, 동맥경화증, 신생아 발작성 간질 등과 같은 질환과 연관되어 있다. 이 유전좌(locus)에서는 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)이 일어나며, 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 확인되었다.
