이 유전자는 당단백질 호르몬 베타 사슬 계열에 속하며 황체형성호르몬(LH)의 베타 소단위를 암호화한다. 당단백질 호르몬은 공통적인 알파 소단위와 고유한 베타 소단위로 구성된 이합체이며, 베타 소단위가 생물학적 특이성을 부여한다. 황체형성호르몬은 뇌하수체에서 발현되어 테스토스테론 및 난소의 스테로이드 합성을 촉진함으로써 정자형성 및 배란을 촉진한다. 융모성 성선자극호르몬의 베타 사슬과 황체형성호르몬에 대한 유전자는 염색체 19q13.3에 연속적으로 존재한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 불임 및 가성반음양증을 특징으로 하는 저성선기능저하증과 관련이 있다.
