이 유전자는 베타-갈락토사이드 결합 단백질 계열인 갈렉틴(galectins)에 속하며, 세포-세포 및 세포-기질 상호작용 조절에 관여합니다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 S-타입 렉틴(S-type lectin)입니다. Hodgkin 림프종 조직에서 과발현되며, H&RS 세포와 주변 세포 간의 상호작용에 참여하여 이 질병 및/또는 관련 면역결핍의 병인에 역할을 할 수 있습니다. 이 유전자에 대해 여러 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체(alternatively spliced transcript variants)가 발견되었습니다.
