유전자 개요

LEP 유전자는 백색 지방세포(white adipocyte)가 순환계로 분비하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 에너지 항상성(energy homeostasis) 조절에서 핵심적인 역할을 한다. 순환 렙틴(leptin)은 뇌의 렙틴 수용체(leptin receptor)에 결합해 섭식을 억제하고 에너지 소비를 촉진하는 하위 신호 경로를 활성화하며, 이 외에도 여러 내분비 기능을 가지고 면역·염증 반응, 조혈, 혈관신생, 생식, 골 형성, 상처 치유 조절에도 관여한다. 이 유전자와 그 조절 영역의 돌연변이(mutation)는 인간 환자에서 중증 비만 및 성선기능저하증을 동반한 병적 비만을 유발하며, 일부 돌연변이는 제2형 당뇨병(type 2 diabetes mellitus) 발생과도 연관된 것으로 보고되었다.
