LEFTY1 유전자는 TGF-베타(transforming growth factor-beta) 단백질 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)의 분비형 리간드(ligand)를 암호화한다. 이 계열의 리간드는 다양한 TGF-베타 수용체에 결합하여 SMAD 계열 전사 인자(transcription factor)의 동원 및 활성화를 유도하며, 이는 유전자 발현을 조절한다. 암호화된 전구단백질(preproprotein)은 성숙 단백질을 생성하기 위해 단백질 분해 처리 과정을 거치며, 이 단백질은 발달 과정 중 기관계의 좌우 비대칭 결정에 역할을 한다.
